ASSEMBLYMAN ERRIGO
RESPONDS TO GOVERNOR PATAKI'S ANNUAL ADDRESS
Governor George Pataki recently delivered his tenth
annual "State of the State" address. The Governor used the opportunity to
outline a bold and positive course for New York state in 2004. I will make
every effort to see that the Governor's plan is successfully implemented so
our state can return to its place of economic and cultural preeminence.
Job creation is perhaps the most pressing issue facing
our state. I am supportive of Governor Pataki's plan to strengthen
manufacturing and further develop the state's high-tech industrial sector.
By developing these areas of our economy we can expand and increase
employment in our region.
Escalating state taxes was another issue to which the
Governor called attention. In 2003, I voted against the numerous tax and fee
increases contained in the state budget and I will work in a similar manner
when presented with this year's budget proposal. I applaud the unity of the
Governor, the Speaker of the Assembly and the majority Leader of the Senate
in a stance against tax increases.
I was encouraged to hear that the Governor will
concentrate on Medicaid reform to control costs for local governments. This
is in line with a proposal unveiled by my Assembly Republican colleagues and
I that will aid taxpayers by relieving the sizable debt incurred by local
Medicaid costs.
Reformation of the school funding formula is another
pressing concern. Governor Pataki offered a plan that is fair and
sustainable and I will work with him to see that we implement a formula that
is responsive to the needs of school districts.
These issues are only pieces of the larger Assembly
Republican "Road to Renewal" program. I am eager to work with the Governor
on initiatives to make New York a better place to live and work.
