STATEMENT FROM ASSEMBLYMAN ERRIGO

Today’s agreement guarantees that law enforcement personnel and parents will have access to the information they need to further protect New York’s families from sexual predators.

My Republican colleagues and I have been circulating a petition advocating tougher measures to prevent sex crimes. We have collected more than 15,000 signatures from New Yorkers demanding the Assembly strengthen Megan’s Law, including mandating lifetime registration for certain convicted sex offenders.

While it does not go as far as our legislation, this measure does ensure that 168 sex offenders whose information would have been omitted from the Megan’s Law registry on January 21 will now be kept in the system. This is a good first step. I am hopeful the Assembly will act on the rest of the measures, including civil confinement, designed to strengthen and improve Megan’s Law.
