Errigo: Federal Government Should Extend Medicare Part D Deadline
Today, I joined my Assembly
colleagues in passing a resolution requesting Congress extend the deadline
for seniors to enroll in the Medicare Part D program, without penalty, from
May 15 to October 15.
Seniors across my district are having problems
enrolling in this new program. I support extending the deadline because
anyone who enrolls after May 15 could face a cumulative penalty of 1 percent
per month. This penalty would be applied to their monthly fees for as long
as they use the program. We must allow seniors ample time to make educated
decisions on which of the 46 coverage plans New York offers is right for
their prescription needs.
The resolution will be sent to President Bush, Speaker
Hastert and New York’s congressional delegation.
