COLUMN FOR THE WEEK OF 9/26/2005
BY ASSEMBLYMAN JOE ERRIGO
ATTENTION VETERANS!
YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR NEW YORK STATE’S HIGHEST MILITARY HONORS
We can never honor enough the sacrifices made by our
veterans who give of themselves for our freedom. They left loved ones to
protect the ideals of democracy. They put themselves in harm’s way, just so
you and I could wake up in the morning with countless opportunities for
better lives.
If you are a veteran, you may be eligible to receive New York’s highest
military honors. Veterans who received a military or unit citation while
serving in the U.S. armed forces may apply for the Conspicuous Service
Cross, the Conspicuous Service Star and the Medal for Merit. Veterans must
be current New York state residents or state residents at the time of active
duty to be eligible. Eligible veterans will be required to complete an
application form.
In cases where eligible veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice, the
prestigious medals can be awarded to their next of kin in recognition of the
soldiers’ valiant contributions to our state and country.
As I write, the men and women of the United States military are
fighting to promote democracy so others may enjoy freedoms such as those
outlined in our Constitution. I thank our veterans for striving to share
with other world citizens the high ideals and values espoused in that sacred
document. The awards are another way we can express our gratitude to men and
women – past and present – in uniform.
I wish to personally honor those veterans awarded one of the
Conspicuous Service awards, which is why I will host a special awards
ceremony to be announced at a later date. To receive more information and an
application, please call me or my staff at (585) 334-5210, or e-mail
