A CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD
Measures to strengthen laws regarding sex offenders are
the top priority for the Assembly minority members when the 2006 legislative
session convenes in January. That’s why I’m calling on residents to take
part in a petition drive calling for passage of these various bills.
Sex offenders are a danger to society and must be
controlled. That’s why I took the initiative to send my district residents a
petition demanding the Assembly majority allow civil confinement legislation
to come to the floor for a vote. You spoke and they listened. Speaker
Sheldon Silver earlier this week announced he will allow our bill to be
debated and voted on early in January during the start of the 2006
legislative session.
My petition has already reached your homes in parts of
Livingston, Monroe and Ontario counties. This petition calls for passage of
proposals to strengthen Meagan’s Law, including:
-
Civil confinement to keep the most dangerous sexual
predators confined to mental-health facilities after their prison
sentences are complete (A.2693)
-
Prevent convicted sex offenders from living within 1,000
feet of a school or school grounds (A.1564)
-
Require the most dangerous offenders to wear electronic
devices linked to Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to monitor
their movements (A.8158)
-
Expand information available about sex offenders on the
Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Web site to include information on
all registered sex offenders (A.1701)
-
Require law enforcement to release information on Level 2
and 3 sex offenders – those at the highest risk of repeating their crimes
– to vulnerable populations in the community (A.1654)
-
Require lifetime registration for all sex offenders on the
state Sex Offender Registry.
I’m urging all residents to sign this petition and return it to my office.
When I return to Albany I will present these petitions to the Assembly
majority as a reminder that New Yorkers are demanding passage of civil
confinement legislation.
We must continue to show our support for this legislation until the final
vote is cast. My Assembly Republican colleagues and I have pushed for this
legislation for nearly a decade in an effort to make New York an even
safer place to live, work and raise a family. Petitions have been coming
in but let’s not stop now.
You can help. Ask your friends and neighbors to sign this petition. If you
need more copies contact my office at (585) 334-5210. I thank you in
advance for your support. Together, we can make a difference.
