ERRIGO: CIVIL CONFINEMENT NEEDED TO PROTECT FAMILIES
Assemblyman Joe Errigo (R,C-Conesus) today joined
his Assembly Republican colleagues in unveiling the SAVE-NY Task Force
report, which includes numerous bills and proposals aimed at keeping violent
sexual predators off New York’s streets and out of its neighborhoods.
Errigo emphasized his renewed call for passage of a
civil confinement measure.
“Just like in many communities around New York, a
convicted sexual predator was released in my hometown. Our plan would put
the most dangerous of sex offenders behind bars beyond their prison terms
until they are deemed safe to rejoin society,” said Errigo. “By not passing
civil confinement measures, we are placing our families in unnecessary
danger.”
Errigo is pushing a package of bills that would:
-
Clarify the role of law enforcement posing as children in sting operations.
-
Limit plea bargaining for sex offenders to eliminate the option of pleading
to a nonsexual offense.
-
Eliminate the statute of limitations for the most violent sex crimes.
-
Allow parents to monitor children’s activities on the phone to prevent
abuse.
-
Increase penalties for public lewdness.
-
Increase the penalty for offenders failing to register on the state Sex
Offender Registry from a misdemeanor to a felony.
-
Prohibit sex offenders from working with children.
-
Prohibit sex offenders from living near schools and day care facilities.
“We must pass this legislation to ensure the safety
of all New Yorkers,” said Errigo. “I pledge to continue fighting to protect
our must vulnerable citizens by getting meaningful civil confinement
legislation passed.”
