ERRIGO, ASSEMBLY GOP RENEW CALL FOR SWIFT PASSAGE OF
SEX OFFENDER LEGISLATION
Errigo presents “must do” list before session concludes on June 22
With just 13 full days left in the 2006 legislative
session, Assemblyman Joe Errigo (R,C-Conesus) and his Assembly Republican
colleagues have renewed their call for Speaker Sheldon Silver to pass
legislation aimed at protecting our women and children from sexual
predators.
Errigo and his colleagues were joined by Kim Talman,
NYS Chair of the National Association to Protect Children as well as area
district attorneys in a show of unwavering unity to pressure Speaker Silver
and his Assembly democrat colleagues in action.
“We have the opportunity to end this legislative
session on a positive note by passing laws that will bring peace of mind to
families across New York state,” Errigo said. “It is imperative that Speaker
Silver and his colleagues remove any obstruction when it comes to
legislation that will make great strides to ensure the safety of our
families.”
Errigo and his colleagues presented the following “must
do” list for action by the end of the 2006 legislative session:
-
Civil confinement for violent sex offenders;
-
Require a minimum 25-year prison sentence for first-time
child rapists and increase prison sentences for other predatory sex offenses
(Jessica’s Law);
-
Eliminate the statute of limitation for all violent sex
crimes;
-
Expansion of the state’s DNA database; and
-
Elimination of the “incest loophole” and allow children who
are raped by a family member the same protections as other children.
“After months of intense pressure from the public and
Assembly Republicans, Speaker Silver called civil confinement ‘a key
element’ in his plan to crackdown on sex offenders,” Errigo remarked. “It’s
time that the Speaker live up to his word and work in a bi-partisan effort
to help craft a strong civil confinement measure to ensure that the most
violent sex offenders remain out of our communities.”
