MARITIME SCHOLARSHIP TO BE AWARDED
I'll soon select a local high school senior for an
outstanding educational opportunity at the State University of New York's (SUNY)
Maritime College. The college's Cadet Appointment Program offers students a
full-tuition, four-year scholarship beginning in the fall.
It's an honor for me to choose one student from the
130th Assembly District to have this prestigious educational experience. The
Cadet Appointment Program provides an exceptional education. Where else can
students receive traditional classroom instruction and spend three summers
of international travel aboard America's best-equipped training vessel, the
Empire State VI?
Did you know that SUNY Maritime is the oldest maritime
college in the nation? The college has trained America's future leaders on
land and at sea since its inception in 1874. Many students attending SUNY
Maritime pursue undergraduate degrees in engineering, business or science
while preparing for licensure as ship officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
The deadline for applications is
March 15. Qualified students must:
-
Have a combined SAT score of at least 1200 (ACT composite
of 26 or above)
-
Be a U.S. citizen and have New York state residency for
at least one year prior to Jan. 15 of the year of anticipated fall
entrance to Maritime College
-
Be a high school graduate or within one year of
graduation
-
Be a first-time, first-year college student
-
Demonstrate evidence of leadership skills through
extracurricular activities and school/community involvement
-
Meet the college's general admission requirements and
participate in its Regiment of Cadets and License Program.
If SUNY Maritime College sounds
intriguing and you are or know a student who meets the requirements, please
feel free to contact my office at (585) 334-5210 or via e-mail at
errigoj@assembly.state.ny.us for application information.
