These speeches were written by 4th
Grade students in the
Bloomfield Central School. They were read to the Assemblyman during his
visit of Bloomfield Cenral on April 6, 2006.
What do you think of when I say, “Don’t hurt others?” Do you think about
ways that people hurt each other? I do! People hurt others when they say
mean things like,
“You’re never going to be my friend!”
or
“I hate your shirt!”
or
“I hate the way you act!”
The mean people make others feel bad by name-calling.
They hurt others by calling them ‘loser’ and ‘stinky’. They hurt others by
bullying and pushing and kicking. Mean people hurt others and this makes
the hurt person break down into tears.
Sometimes people are also mean in groups. They
exclude people a lot and don’t let them join groups at recess. These
people are not being respectful to each other.
They are not saying,
“Please, can you come sit with me at lunch?”
And they are not saying,
“Please, come join our group.”
It is time to stop hurting others. This would be the
answer.
Now imagine what the world would be like if people only hurt others. They
would push and kick. Now imagine a world where we don’t hurt others. No
kicking, no pushing and name-calling. It would be just fine and no one
would be fighting.
When I was eight years old, I was at a park with some
friends. Someone pushed me off of the slide. It made me feel really left
out and hurt. We need a world where people are kind to others…a world
where people share and are nice to one another. Imagine a world filled
with nice, kind sharing people just like Mr. Roll who cheers me up by
making me laugh.
Ask yourself how you want to treat others and how you want to
be treated. Do you want to be mean and cruel to others? Or do you want to
be extraordinary like others who do not hurt each other? I think the
answer is to be Extraordinary and not hurt others. That would make the
world a happier place, and it would make everyone’s lives better if people
didn’t hurt each other.

Let’s pretend that instead of
trying to prevent war we supported it. Can you picture what it would be like
if the world was one vast conflict? I know I couldn’t. Try to imagine all
the killing, violence, blowing up of innocent citizens just for fun… and all
the other horrid treachery that occurs during war. The earth would slowly
destroy itself. If you agree with me that war is wicked, you should
definitely listen to my speech.
Wouldn’t the world be fantastic if there were no more
wars? A world where everyone is enjoying life, where there is no killing,
where there is no violence, where there is peace and harmony. Wouldn’t earth
be utter glory? But unfortunately there are many wars. There are many people
getting shot. There is so much violence and agony. Family’s argue and fight
with each other. People are feeling so much pain and there is practically no
one living in peace and harmony. War must stop soon or there
may never be world peace. That is why it is vital for the wars to stop. How
much longer should we kill and fight? How much longer should families fight
and argue? How much longer should we blow up innocent people just to get our
way? How much longer should we create weapons of mass destruction to use on
other countries? If you ask me, no longer!
If the letters in the Word War were supposed to be an acronym
the W would stand for wrong, the A would mean absurd, and the R, reckless.
So you see my friends, even the word war is just plain evil.
Why is there war when there can be peace? Why do we
kill? Just to get our way? No!!! War is sick. War is wrong.
War is murder. Even people who have fought in wars are sick of war
and to quote General William Tecumseh Sherman, 15 years after the Civil War,
“I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those
who have neither fired a shot nor heard of the wounded who cry aloud for
blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.”
If you want to know how you can help prevent war it is
simple.
You don’t need to stand in front of a tank or march down Main Street
protesting. You can simply help by not fighting in it. Do you know what I
mean? There can’t be a war without anyone fighting in it. So you see
the answer is simple, Don’t fight in the Wars!
In school we work together; in the world we work with
each other. In school we don’t kill; in the world we do kill. Somewhere
between world and school we change from using reasoning to solve our
problems to using guns to solve our disagreements. Where does this occur? I
think it might be TV; there are at least six crime shows on every night.
There’s South Park, CSI New York, CSI Miami, and many
other killing shows on TV. There might be other things that change people
into killing machines, I don’t know. All I know is that it is vital
for evil to stop.
So, now it’s time for the big question. What kind of
world do you want to live in? What kind of world do you want your children
to live in? Are you willing to help prevent war? Every little thing makes a
difference. Please help stop war. Thank you.

Now when people hear “love” they think of a
boyfriend or girlfriend and all the popular things linked with love.
But this love I’m talking about is a type of that love goes into your
work. I know it makes no sense at all, but this type of love does
have a place in our world. Put love into your work and all you do.
Make your work something you treasure…make your work something you love.
How would the world be like if NO ONE put love
into their work? Let’s start with a typical day. A person gets up moaning
and groaning about everything. They get dressed, almost falling asleep
because they stayed up until one o’clock in the morning! They eat a
“dessert” type of breakfast. They grab their backpack, forgetting to do a
“page” of homework that is falling out of their backpack! The homework falls
on the bus steps! What else could happen!? Well something else did happen!
Their day became worse! When they finally arrived home after a day that was
similar to their morning, they did their homework and went to bed. That’s
what life looks like without love.
Now I want to tell you about person who spends their
day with love. A person wakes up with love running through
their veins. They get dressed with love, and in clothes they think
are cool, but no one else does. They arrive at the kitchen with love, eat a
healthy breakfast with love, that includes a banana, apple and orange
juice. After their breakfast they are still filled with love. On the
bus they ride with love, talk to friends with love, and of course,
exit the bus with love. They are filled with learning during the day,
and get all the knowledge they need with love. So, how will you live?
Will you do a typical day? Or a day with love in you?
I’m going to tell you a story about
a person whose days are filled with love. Her name is Jessica Rider.
Jessica rises up and feels like butterflies are going through her. But
really it’s love. Jessica picks out her outfits with love. She
goes to school with love. After school, Jessica goes home with
love. Practically, Jessica does everything with love!? Right?! Of
course! Jessica is a person who does everything with love.
If you think you can put love into your work and the
places around you such as your home… your nation…you are welcome to listen
to this. You NEED to put love in all you do. The people who put
love in all they do, are RICH! Not with money, but with love. All
you need to do, is to work from the heart. Not from the head.
If you put love in everything you do from the heart, I
bet you’ll be an extraordinary person. You’ll live your life feeling as if
you just received a fresh gallon of blood in you. Here, I’ll explain it more
carefully. Living with love is like leaving the city and traveling to
a quiet place in the country.
If you put love in everything you do from the
head instead of the heart, I bet you’ll be a troublesome person. You’ll live
your life feeling as if you’ve been tossed into polluted water. Or you’ll
live with the same upset feeling a person has whose been fired from their
dream job.
You can put love into all you do by
writing a paragraph about someone. Write something nice…something wonderful
about them…something that describes their extraordinary…………..and go on, and
on, and on. And do this with love. Put love into it with all
your might! There are many ways you can show your love.
So, ask yourself what you want to do for your job? What
kind of life do you want? Maybe you will be willing to work on something you
cherish…. something you love…something you care for.
Just let your love spread over your work and into everything you do!
Will you put love into your work? Or will you be a
person who only works from the head? Please be a person that works from the
heart and puts love into all everything they do. Think about it.
THANK YOU!
